Some residents managed to escape, many of whom end up in Traverse Town. According to Leon, Maleficent invaded Hollow Bastion's world with her Heartless nine years before the events of Kingdom Hearts. The result is a twisted bastion half beautiful castle, half distorted factory. However, eventually Ansem's apprentices led by Xehanort overthrew their former mentor, and furthered Ansem's original drives to include more mechanical components. The original Kingdom Hearts feels like a proper journey, and that’s in large part due to the Worlds Sora visits. Sora’s first adventure arguably features the best incorporation of Disney Worlds in the series, actually advancing the narrative through them instead of relegating plot to the end of the game.
